160 Handy Twitter Tools and Resources

I’ve been talking to clients about Twitter a lot lately. The big question has been “How do I find people to follow?” So, I’ve compiled this list of Twitter resources that not only help you find folks to follow, also help you maintain your account, manage your tweets, back-up your tweets – you name it. These resources are FREE or offer a free version.  Please let me know if I’ve missed any of your favorite Twitter tools

Desktop Clients

• BeTwittered - Twitter gadget for iGoogle.
• DestroyTwitter - Consists of a series of canvases that constantly update to keep tweets up-to-date using notifications that appear when a new tweet arrives.
• DigiTweet - Open source desktop Twitter client for Windows. DigiTweet provides Twitter functionalities with rich user interface through Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).
• HootSuite - Professional Twitter client.
• NatsuLion - Simple Twitter client for Mac OS X.
• Seesmic - Desktop client to manage your life stream from Facebook & multiple Twitter accounts. Create groups and searches and view them any way you like.
• Spaz - Desktop and mobile Twitter client.
• Snitter - Adobe AIR platform which is both Mac OSX and Microsoft Windows compatible. There is currently a Linux version of Adobe AIR in alpha testing but some functionality is likely missing.
• Skimmer - Adobe® AIR™ desktop application designed to streamline, beautify, and enhance the experience of participating in your most frequently used social networking activities.
• TweetDeck - Personal browser for staying in touch with what’s happening now, connecting you with your contacts across Twitter, Facebook and more.
• Tweetie - Mac client for Twitter. Tweetie is free to download and try for as long as you want. It’s full-featured and has some of the most beautiful ads around (courtesy of Fusion Ads). You can register to keep your timeline ad-free for only $19.95.
• Tweetr - Client that allows you to send and receive Twitter messages.
• Twibble - Multi account Twitter client for Mac, Linux, and Windows built on top of the Adobe AIR platform.
• Twinja - Empowers you with the functionality of Twitter.com from your desktop! It’s easy to use and works on both Mac & PC.
• Twitterific - Lets you both read and publish posts or “tweets” to the Twitter community website.
• Twitterlicious - Windows application that makes using Twitter more fun. It handles all the hard work, leaving you to read and write tweets with the minimum fuss.
• Twhirl - Desktop client for social software such as Twitter, Friendfeed, identi.ca, or seesmic.
• Ubuntu DeskBar – Nice way to keep up to date with what your friends are doing using the web, IM or SMS.
• Yoono - Connect to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, AIM and more…in one place.

• Just Tweet It – Another user generated directory.
• MrTweet.com – Automated service that recommends people to follow based upon your Twitter usage.
• Nearby Tweets – View tweets and tweeps near you.
• TweeFind.com – Results based on user rank and keywords.
• TweepSearch - Search for people by name, handle or keyword. Indexes Twitter profiles.
• Tweepz - Search for people to follow by keyword.
• TweetCatch - “Catches” new people to follow based on your usage.

• TwitDir – Search by a variety of criteria including handles, profiles, locations, etc.
• TwitSeeker – Provides a list of people that tweet about your relevant topics based upon your Twitter usage and specific keywords.
• TwitWho – Search the “Twitter Sphere” by category and set-up your own custom groups.
• Twitterator - “Allows a Twitter user to “follow” a bunch of other Twitter users in one fell swoop—a Twitter friend list generator if you will.”
• Twitter Friends Network Browser – Browse your friends, your friends’ friends, etc.
• Twitterholic - Directory of “TOP” Twitter users.
• TwitterRel -  Keyword search based on interests.
• Twitter Search – Search Twitter posts by keyword. Great, easy way to find folks to follow that are tweeting about subjects relevant to you.
• Twitscoop - Receive, send tweets, and find new friends instantly, without ever reloading your page.
• TwitterTroll - Real-time Twitter search engine.
• Twubble.com – Creates a list based upon your followers’ followers.
• Utwitbook - Keyword search of users.
• WeFollow.com – Add yourself to the directory then search for new users by tags. Data filtered by number of followers and most influential.
  

User Management

• FriendorFollow – One of my favorites. Easy way to see who you are following and aren’t following you back as well as people following you that YOU aren’t following back.
• MyCleenr - Easy way to sort your friends by their latest tweets.
• My Tweeple – “Designed to help you make informed decisions when it comes to following people on Twitter.”
• Less Friends – Very similar to FriendorFollow.
• SocialToo - Keep your follower lists in sync across networks, and learn more about your relationships.
• Tweep Tracker – With tweep tracker, you can find out who’s following you that you don’t follow back, who you’re following that doesn’t follow you back, as well who your mutual friends are.
• Twitter Karma – Creates a sortable list of your followers and people you follow. Also allows for bulk actions like follow, unfollow and block.
• TwitBlocker – “Are you being overwhelmed by twitter friends who can’t stop talking, but they’re like… still your friends? Install this greasemonkey script, then double clicking the chattering peeps will temporarily remove their tweets from your time line. Restart your browser to get them back. Simple eh?”.
• Twitoria - How many friends are you really following? Twitoria finds your friends that haven’t tweeted in a long time so you can give them the boot!
• TwitterFriends - Cool tool that provides user management like seeing Twitter friends online right now as well as statistics.

• AutoTweeter - Desktop twitter automation , tweet scheduler , automatic twitter software.
• Future Tweets – Free service that lets you schedule your Twitter messages.
• Twaitter - Enhanced Twitter platform with tweet scheduler.
• Twitomate -  Queue tweets for delayed publication.
• TwitResponse - Setup unlimited messages to be delivered to your twitter page when you want.
• Twuffer - Allows the Twitter user to compose a list of future tweets, and schedule their release.

Stream Management

Avoid Spammers

• TwerpScan – Helps weed out “spammers, bots and, err, spambots!”

Plug-ins for WordPress

• MyTwitter - Allows users to display their Twitter status updates (tweets) on their WordPress site and update their status through the Settings page for MyTwitter.
