Freelance Friday – Why Happpy Clients Make Me Smile

Happy ClientsBeing a small business owner is a tough job. There are so many things to think about – expenses, bringing in new business, client projects…and paying yourself. So, when a client is excited about a project or gives me a pat on the back, it always feels good.

I have been blessed over the past few years with really good clients. Clients that want to be part of the process, have great ideas and recognize when I go above and beyond for them. That’s truly rewarding. Clients are part of the team and my job is to support them through the process of building a website, establishing a digital marketing program and sometimes just getting out of a bad situation with a past consultant.

I’m a hand-holder, a teammate, a friend and sometimes I even help with re-homing their animals (hey, why not?) So, when they’re happy, I’m ecstatic.

How can you and your clients be better buds?

  • Listen. You don’t always have to be the one talking. Listen to their needs, wishes and even pie in the sky ideas and work with them to establish what makes sense and plan for the future.
  • Support. Your client may be overwhelmed with the task at hand or lack the self confidence to make decisions. Support them by offering advice, encouragement and expertise. That’s why they hired you.
  • Be honest. I’ve met many consultants who tell their clients anything they want to hear. I tell my clients that if that’s what they want – don’t hire me. I make it a point to be honest about what clients want (or in many cases think they want). Managing their expectations is key and I never like to over commit and under deliver.
  • Let them learn from  your experience. The client has hired you because you have expertise in any area that they don’t. Use past experiences, your knowledge of the industry and your gut to help them learn from the successes and mistakes of others.

So the next time you’re stressed about a clients demands, think about all the great clients you work with. It will make you feel better and may even help you turn your challenging client around!
