I’d like to think that we should all be forgiven for doing something stupid in public. Give Kanye a break. He was drunk and highly entertaining and it was the VMAs so who really cares? Serena Williams – I’ve been THAT angry before…just not on international TV. But she apologized and went on to say that she got caught up in the heat of the moment. But Redskins linebacker Robert Henson, who posted insulting comments on Twitter about Redskins fans, are you an idiot?
Henson posted a variety of colorful comments about his adoring fans shortly after Sunday’s game. Henson called the fans “dim wits” and asked how people who “work 9 to 5 at McDonald’s” could know what’s best for the team. Nice. What a way to put butts in seats (like it isn’t hard enough already). Did I mention that he’s a rookie and hasn’t actually played in a game yet? After a lame apology, Henson deleted his Twitter account (so say Redskins representatives) – at any rate, it’s not there.
This is all in the wake of the recent NFL ruling that players are forbidden to post to social media profiles 90 minutes prior to kickoff and immediately after the game. Officials are banned from social media platforms altogether.
As a huge NFL fan (but happily not a Redskins fan), I understand that many of these players are arrogant and spoiled. (And some are also incredibly accessible and give back to the commuity – we just hear more about the jerks.) But the popularity of Twitter and more so of professional athletes that use Twitter is giving us a new unfiltered view into their lives.Cincinnati’s Chad Johnson has 181,629 followers and is an avid Twitter user. The Saints’ Reggie Bush has 327,672 followers. Think Ocho Cinco is jealous?
Check out other NFL players on Twitter – who will be next to stick his foot in his mouth?
The moral? Dont piss off your customers by posting something insulting and stupid on Twitter. Think before you tweet.
Oh – and for my shameless plug – J-E-T-S, Jets Jets Jets!!! Go Mark Sanchez!
