I found this great post from Noupe.com that does a fantastic job of laying out not only how to choose the right content management system (CMS) but also makes some recommendations among the variety of systems available.
Ten Simple Guidelines for Choosing the Perfect CMS – Noupe.com
Having assisted many clients in selecting a CMS, I would add that ensuring you have full access to your data is critical . This is particularly important if your CMS is hosted on the provider’s server. If you decide to change applications or need a backup, your data should be readily available to you.
I’ve used Joomla! and WordPress pretty extensively as CMSs. WordPress is my favorite and is going to be the cheapest and easiest way to get a CMS for a small website. It’s also going to give you the most control over the functionality. Joomla! is more complex but is a good open source option if you have a larger website and need to manage lots of pages. The Joomla! learning curve is a little higher and you will likely need someone to help you install and configure it, but it is a dynamic option for larger websites.
