We are in the calm before the storm at GoodDogz.org with a spring and summer full of events. We’ve recently brought a wonderful and dynamic Director of Public Relations on board, Kris Francisco, and are putting together our strategy for getting our information out to the media. In the past, we have utilized email and traditional press release distribution websites. Now, we are thinking about how we can better use social media to get our info out.
Public relations doesn’t have to be expensive, but it can be time consuming. We also send out “media alerts” about a week before an event with basic information about the event. A well-written press release and media follow-up is a powerful tool. Be prepared to reply to media inquiries in a timely fashion or you will soon lose their interest. Good PR is all about timing.
Also, be sure to list a press contact on your website. This should be someone who is easy to contact and will respond quickly. If possible, experience working with the media is a huge plus.
Here are a few tools that we are going to try along with a list of press release distribution services:
- PitchEngine – Cool new press release builder that combines traditional distribution with social media.
- BuzzGain – a new DIY public relations tool (Great post about BuzzGain at TechCrunch)
- Sample of a Social Media Release – from PRSquared
- How to Write a Social Media Press Release - from CopyBlogger
